Common Questions About ADA Women’s Center

I don’t have insurance. Can I still get treatment?

Yes. We accept patients with no medical insurance. We also accept other insurance. Self-pay is also available.

How do I get myself/my loved one into ADA House?

Contact ADA Women’s Center at (409) 763-5516 and speak with our intake specialist. Or call The Gulf Coast Center at 409-944-4337 and ask for a screening.  Often, there is a wait list for clients which is dependent on available funding.

How do I have a conversation with someone I am concerned about?

If you are concerned about the life and health of someone you love who is using a prescribed or unprescribed substance, please remember to use words that indicate love and concern rather than blame and shame. You can offer to connect your loved one with addiction professionals who can help frame your loved one’s life experience in terms of on-going risk or on-going recovery.  Sometimes even family members minimize the risk of substance misuse.  That is when a thorough screening and assessment can help everyone understand what kind of options are available to change the direction in which a person is headed.

Do you allow prescription medication in your facility?

Yes. Medication must be in the container supplied by the pharmacy. Clients self-administer medications under staff supervision.

Can I see a psychiatrist while I am at ADA House?

While we support the integrated treatment of mental health and addiction, we do not have a psychiatrist on staff and are therefore unable to assist in obtaining psychiatric medications during your stay. We encourage you to get in touch with your Local Mental Health Authority for assistance in obtaining mental health treatment. The following link is where you can find the LMHA near you:https://hhs.texas.gov/services/mental-health-substance-use/mental-health-substance-use-resources/find-your-local-mental-health-or-behavioral-health-authority

If you are already in services with a psychiatrist and will need to attend a follow-up appointment during your stay, we ask that you let us know as soon as possible. ADA provides transportation only to appointments on Galveston Island. If your appointment is elsewhere, we ask that you arrange for your own transportation and coordinate with your counselor while in treatment at ADA.

What do I do if I have to go to court while I am at ADA House?

It’s important that you communicate to your attorney and anyone else involved in your situation that you will be going to treatment. If court date cannot be reset, you will be responsible for arranging transportation to and from court.

How long will I be there?

When you arrive, you will meet with a licensed counselor who will conduct an assessment and work with you to develop a treatment plan. Your length of stay will vary depending on your needs, goals, and progress in treatment.

Do I need money while I’m there?

Money is not required. However, we take trips to the store once per week. If you’d like to purchase anything at the store you will need to bring your own money. We ask that you use either cash or a debit card. We do not recommend bringing more than $25.

Can my friends and family visit me while I’m there?

The following was our policy prior to Covid 19 considerations.  Having a healthy, sober support system is imperative for your success in recovery. Each Saturday we have a family program at 10am followed by visitation until 2pm. We ask that you invite only people in your life who are supportive and encouraging of your recovery efforts. We limit each client to inviting 2 adults for visitation, and we encourage children to attend as well. In order to protect the recovery of all clients, no one will be allowed to attend group or visitation under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Currently, visitation happens over Zoom.  Your family will be given log-in information by your counselor.

What happens during treatment?

Our program provides a variety of treatment activities within a structured schedule. The majority of your treatment will consist of group and individual counseling. You will have an individual treatment plan which is updated regularly during treatment.  We also provide occupational therapy, yoga, meditation, psychoeducation, nutrition classes, and a parenting class. You will also have access to a case manager to assist you with planning for discharge and life after treatment.
